We develop accessible radio-astronomy instruments and experiments that allow undergraduate students to engage directly with antenna systems, radio-frequency electronics, astronomical observations, and data analysis.
The Undergraduate Radio Lab is an ObsCAL initiative to develop an accessible, research-informed radio astronomy laboratory for students, drawing inspiration from UC Berkeley's Undergraduate Radio Lab. Using a small radio telescope, students gain hands-on experience with antenna systems, radio-frequency electronics, spectral-line observations, calibration, and astronomical data analysis. Following the successful detection of Galactic H I emission at 21 cm, we are expanding the laboratory toward a two-element interferometry experiment that will introduce students to visibility measurements, delay calibration, fringe detection, and aperture synthesis.
